This drummer's short life -- he came and went in just shy of 30 years -- was spent in Kansas City. Willie "Mack" Washington set the pace during that time for one of the jazz mecca's grandest institutions, the Count Basie band. During a decade beginning in 1926, Washington drummed with the band of Bennie Moten, eventually featuring Basie on the piano bench. Washington was only 18 years old when he began this association. Following Moten's death, Basie took over the band, retaining Washington until 1936 when he was replaced by Jo Jones, who became considerably more famous. Washington went on to work in the group of Buster Smith. An excellent collection entitled Kansas City Powerhouse examines the transition from Moten to Basie and features both Washington and Jones. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
