I think the key to his music lies in his moral point of view combined with his craving for lost innocence brought on by his increasing disillusionment with man. -Peter Pears of Benjamin Britten
It is the composer's duty, as a member of society, to speak to or for his fellow human beings
Jeri Southern was a vocalist with a simple and direct delivery, a superior torch singer who mostly stuck to the lyrics of songs. She was at her best on ballads that had meaningful and emotional lyrics, and in ways she epitomized the laidback and cool style of singing that was popular in the 1950s.
Born in 1926, she was well trained as a classical pianist. However she became attracted to jazz in the 1940s, converted her style, and was occasionally Anita O'Day's accompanist. Southern began to sing herself in the late 1940s. She had a hit in 1951 with You Better Go Now and recorded fairly regularly during the decade. However Southern became tired of the music business and retired from performing in 1961, spend the 30 years left to her as a highly respected vocal and piano coach.
When I Fall In Love has the musical highlights of the first half of Jeri Southern's career, dating from 1949-54. In addition to You Better Go Now, it includes her personal interpretations of 24 other songs including When I Fall In Love, What Good Am I Without You, The Very Thought Of You and The Man That Got Away.
This definitive set is a perfect introduction to the haunting vocals of Jeri Southern.
