Chick Corea, Piano; Joe Farrell, Flute/Soprano Sax; Flora Purim, Vocals/Percussion; Airto Moreira, Drums/Percussion.
One of the giants of jazz, Chick Corea has always had a strong musical curiosity and the desire to stretch himself. He has been involved in many rewarding musical projects through the years, mastering both piano and electric keyboards and displaying his own musical personality in every setting. In his early years, Corea was a sideman with Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan and Miles Davis, playing everything from Latin jazz and hard bop to early fusion. After being part of the avant-garde quartet Circle, he formed the first of three versions of Return to Forever.
While the second version of Return to Forever, with the rock-oriented band featuring guitarist Al DiMeola, bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White, is best known, the first version, which is featured on the CD Return to Forever, is the most lyrical and accessible. Corea, heard here on electric piano, teamed up with Clarke, Joe Farrell (on flute and soprano), singer Flora Purim and drummer-percussionist Airto Moreira in 1972 for this atmospheric and enjoyable set. This unique music, which is Brazilian-oriented but also tied to jazz, is highlighted by a lengthy medley of Sometime Ago - La Fiesta.
This rewarding Chick Corea CD is easily recommended.
