Since his stints with pianist George Shearing and saxophonist Stan Getz in the 1960s, vibraphonist Gary Burton has gone from sideman to bandleader to satellite radio host. A winner of Downbeat's poll for Talent Deserving Wider Recognition in 1965, he won its prestigious Jazzman of the Year Award in 1968. At Boston's prestigious Berklee School of Music, he progressed from teaching percussion and improvisation to becoming dean and executive vice-president with an honorary doctorate for good measure. He fostered Berklee's odyssey from a small music school to the world's largest music school of its kind, with 14 worldwide partner schools.
